The LJ Holden Torana GTR XU1 is undoubtedly an Aussie legend. In 1972, Peter Brock claimed his first win at Mount Panorama driving solo in an XU1 – cementing Brock as a future legend of Australian motorsport, and giving Holden the ultimate tagline for the Torana’s sales brochure.

Based on the Torana GTR, which introduced a 3.3-litre straight-six engine with 118kW and 258Nm, the XU1 was introduced as a performance and handling package, bringing with it a new front air dam to improve cooling and a small rear spoiler to improve aerodynamics.

The big boy V8s might’ve had more power in the straights, but the XU1’s legendary handling meant improved corner exit speeds, securing that legendary win at the tight Bathurst circuit.

It’s hard to find truly unmodified, all-original examples of the XU1 these days, but that’s precisely what this car is. Finished in stunning Zodiac Blue with a black leather interior, it left the Adelaide factory in November 1972 – just one month after Brock’s legendary Hardie-Ferodo 500 victory.

As a result, it’s one of the final run of 200 updated LJs that have come to be known retrospectively as ‘Bathurst Specials’.

Presenting in excellent condition for its age, this particular Torana only shows 58,548 miles on the odometer. It features its original 14-inch ‘Sprintmaster’ wheels, triple carburettors, limited slip differential, and even the original cabin and boot carpets.

As one of the most desirable specification XU1s presenting as it left the production line, this is a true Holden collector’s piece with unequivocal motorsport provenance.
