The Details:

A well presented left-hand drive example of Mercedes’ homologation-derived ‘W201’ generation four door performance sedan, this 1986 Mercedes 190E Cosworth 2.3-16 is finished in Smoke Silver metallic paintwork over an Anthracite leather interior.

The 190E 2.3-16 was a return to form for Mercedes - their first hot sedan after some years away during an all-too-familiar energy crisis. At the time, the marque needed a production car to homologate its new Cosworth-powered 190E for the DTM German touring car championship, and the 2.3-16 was the answer.

That 2.3-litre M102 16-valve Cosworth engine was the heart and soul of the car, using a light alloy cylinder head, dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. It was paired with a five-speed dogleg Getrag manual transmission, a limited-slip differential and K-Jetronic fuel injection. The cars also gained revised suspension, larger disc brakes, sports seats and a reduced drag body kit over the base model.

Built in Bremen, Germany, for the North American market, this vehicle was imported from New York to New Zealand in 2022. It is reported to be a genuine 190E 2.3-16 with factory long tube Cosworth headers.

This 190E Cosworth rides aftermarket 17-inch Compomotive wheels shod in Nitto Neo Gen tyres and has been fit with European headlights, also wearing the model specific front air dam, rear spoiler, side skirts and fender flares.

The Anthracite leather cabin features a factory sunroof and power-adjustable Recaro sport seats in the front, with matching bolstered rear seats, and is reported to retain the factory lap timer, oil temperature and volt meter gauges. A mid-1990s aftermarket stereo has been installed.

Some cracking on the top side of the dash and marks consistent with the age of the vehicle are reported.

This vehicle will be accompanied by factory service books and records, meticulous maintenance invoices and sales documentation. It will be sold with a six-month warrant of fitness.
