The Details:
The Shelby GT350R is an exceptionally rare car with only 34 examples ever having been produced, ensuring its unobtanium status. However, this exceptional tribute located in Melbourne offers the same tough looks and performance but with more creature comforts than the stripped-out racer it emulates.
Starting out in life as a 1966 Ford Mustang Fastback, this car was treated to a complete right-hand drive conversion back in 2010, and to ensure its legality on Aussie roads it comes provided with an engineering certificate for peace of mind.
Powered by Ford’s iconic 302 V8 – where an original GT350R would’ve featured the smaller 289 – this engine has been upgraded with an MSD Ignition system, lumpy cam to help it rumble at the stop lights, and a set of Cobra valve covers to complete the under-hood look.
The engine was compression tested at over 200psi consistently across all eight cylinders, indicating its strength. It comes backed by a five-speed manual, making this a real driver’s example.
Finished in a beautiful shade of grey with black stripes, the GT350R-style front bumper gives this car seriously determined looks while correct badging rounds out the look. It also sits pretty on a set of GT Magnum wheels.
While the Shelby it emulates was built as a track-focused racer with no space for creature comforts, this car differs in featuring an immaculate black vinyl interior and several mod cons.
Neatly integrated in the centre of the dashboard is a radio that looks entirely period-correct but features Bluetooth integration, and it’s hooked up to a Sony Xplod audio system. There’s also a period-correct air conditioning unit mounted under the dashboard as well.
Having claimed several awards at car shows in New South Wales in years past, it’s perhaps no surprise that this car is an absolute head-turner given its excellent presentation and condition.
