2002 FPV GT – Pre Production Model

Fast Facts:

One of ten pre-production FPV BA GTs employed by Ford to promote the launch of the GT in 2003

Numbered P003, this car is supplied with a supporting letter from Ford recognising its provenance, original specification and rarity as one of five equipped with a manual transmission and the only car finished in ‘Blueprint’ blue paintwork

The Details:

Referred to as a modern day Ford unicorn, this 2002 Ford FPV GT pre-production car was originally built as a marketing vehicle used in promotion of the GT launch in 2003 alongside the formation of Ford Performance Vehicles. Not intended for public sale, it is believed to have been purchased in 2006 from an FPV general manager, who had received it as part of his severance deal.

This ‘BA’ FPV GT is equipped with a Boss 290 5.4-litre Ford quad-cam 32-valve V8 paired with a five-speed Tremec TR3650 gearbox. The factory spec also included 325 mm front discs with two-piston calipers and 303 mm rear discs with single-piston calipers.

We understand that before leaving the factory, the original owner upgraded the exhaust, extractors, cold air intake and throttle body, and fitted a roof-mounted DVD player. The vehicle is believed to be otherwise mechanically original.

Supporting paperwork from Ford reports this as the only car of the ten pre-production vehicles to have been finished in ‘Blueprint’ blue paintwork. The cabin is trimmed in warm charcoal leather and features some subtle differences to the production car in the centre console, dash cluster, rear seats and front grille, notably also including a plaque identifying it as P003.

An accompanying Ford Motor Company of Australia letter dated 14 April 2021 confirms the car’s VIN, model, engine, manual transmission, paint, trim and manufacture date. It also records a total pre-production build of ten FPV BA GT Falcon sedans, as well as finish, trim and transmission numbers.

The BA GT was the foundation model for FPV and marked the modern return of the Falcon GT nameplate following the anniversary editions released under Tickford in the ‘90s. As a documented pre-production car, and apparently the only Blueprint example within Ford’s recorded pre-production group, this P003 car has clear appeal for serious Ford and FPV collectors.
