1990 Ferrari F40

Fast Facts

Ferrari’s pin-up supercar superstar of the 1980s and 90s, the F40 was built to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Maranello’s first road car, and was the final model signed off by Enzo Ferrari himself.

In desirable “non-cat, non-adjust” guise, this May 1990-delivered F40 was supplied without a catalytic converter or adjustable suspension, highly prized by enthusiasts and collectors as the supercar remains in its lightest and purest specification.

One of just a handful of right-hand-drive F40s in the world, the only other known examples were all converted from new for the Sultan of Brunei. The matching-numbers car at auction here was personally converted by the mechanical engineer Australian owner, and has been kept in his care for the past 20 years.

The Details

A bespoke right-hand-drive converted late-1990 Ferrari F40 non-cat, non-adjust in Rosso Corsa, indicating 37,063km, with only around 4000km covered in the Australian owner’s 20 years of ownership.

First delivered to Nyon along Lake Geneva in Switzerland, this F40 was cared for by Prestige Automobile Concessionnaire in Perols (Montpellier) in the south of France.

The vendor acquired the 33,000km Pininfarina-styled F40 in 2005, shipping it to Australia where the new owner, a highly skilled engineer, performed a right-hand-drive conversion.

The vendor reports there were no structural changes to the vehicle during the process, so a conversion back to left-hand-drive for Ferrari Classiche Certification is possible.

This particular F40, one of an estimated six in Australia, gained notoriety in 2020 when it was damaged in a single-vehicle accident on the Gold Coast. The engineer owner was able to complete repairs to the carbon/Kevlar body himself to an impressive standard. The car retains all of its original parts.

Other notable changes to this example include the fitment of electric windows and central locking by the owner, along with red material for the centre console.

A suede steering wheel is currently in place along with conventional seat belts, but the F40’s original steering wheel and harnesses are provided with the auction sale, as are its original logbooks.

Powered by a 2.9L twin-turbocharged V8, this non-cat variant offers 352kW and 577Nm, and weighing approximately 1250kg thanks to its composite body panels, the 0-100km/h sprint is covered in only 4.1 seconds.

A poster car hero to a generation of supercar fans, the F40 was also the world’s first 200mph production car with a top speed of 201mph (323km/h).

Mated to a five-speed dogleg manual gearbox and with no power steering, no ABS and no traction control, this rear-drive Maranello masterpiece is a pure, lightweight and raw berlinetta.

Exposed areas of carbon/Kevlar illustrate the quest for keeping weight down, as does polycarbonate for the windows, a wire instead of a door handle and a lack of carpets, door panels, audio system or a glove box. But air conditioning as standard was a rare concession in F40s.

The original Speedline centre-lock alloy wheels remain with the car, in 8x17-inch (front) and giant 13x17-inch rear size. Mighty 335/35 ZR17 Pirelli rear tyres (brand new) give incredible presence when viewed from behind.

Original warranty card shows the car was delivered on May 11 1990 by IFS Importation Ferrari (Suisse) in Nyon.

The service books have stamps from Ferrari’s Prestige Automobile Concessionnaire in Perols, south of France, for the 10,000km, 20,000km and 30,000km services.

An expert engineer, the Australian owner has carried out the right-hand-drive conversion, all maintenance and accident repairs following the 2020 incident.

Non-standard suede steering wheel (original included with sale).

Original harnesses (currently removed) included with sale.

Wear and staining to seats.

Owner-added central locking, electric windows (switches in centre console) and red trim for the centre console.

An incredibly rare opportunity to obtain and own one of only a handful of Australian-based Ferrari F40s, and the only known right-hand-drive converted example outside those originally delivered to the Sultan of Brunei.

More affordable than many lower-kilometre F40s, this is a Ferrari legend that’s been driven and enjoyed, and ready to offer its new owner all the raw thrills that come with owning arguably the greatest road going Ferrari of them all.
