This Intermeccanica 356 Speedster replica is a lovely little thing, deftly capturing the light and simple open-air appeal of Porsche’s celebrated 1950s Speedster, while being quite a rare and interesting machine in its own right.

Founded by Frank Reisner, Intermeccanica became known for low-volume specialist cars before moving into 356 replicas after the Reisner family moved to California in 1975. The company’s history states that the 356 replica project became their keynote car, with approximately 600 replicas produced during the Automobili Intermeccanica partnership.

This example is understood to have been built by Intermeccanica during the late 1970s, with the seller reporting it to be build number 178. 

Finished in an elegant silver over a black interior, the Speedster rides chrome wheels with Porsche-style hubcaps. Auxiliary front driving lights, headlight stone guards and leather bonnet straps combine with the low windscreen and Brooklands-style wind deflectors for a particularly evocative look.

Power is supplied by a 1600 cc air-cooled flat-four, paired with a manual transmission. The chassis number visible in the front luggage area, 1132042140, appears consistent with Volkswagen Type 1 numbering, which is in keeping with many early 356 replicas.
