Shane Jacobson's 1963 MGB

Fast Facts:

  • Offered from the private collection of Australian actor, director, writer and producer, and friend of RR Auctions, Shane Jacobson

  • Fully restored, including rebuilt motor, respray and reupholstery

The Details:

This 1963 MGB is a beautifully restored early chrome bumper example, offered out of the Macedon Ranges in Victoria by Shane Jacobson.

Introduced in 1962 and replacing the MGA, the MGB was light and modern, with a peppy motor, great H-pattern gearbox and disc brakes that made for a spirited and engaging drive. Simple to own and run, it established itself as an icon of British motoring, and its enduring popularity ensures that it’s just as enjoyable to own today. The cars are confident on modern roads and particularly charming on a cool Autumn’s day, with a stretch of open road ahead of you.

This example is reported to have been fully restored in Canberra by a previous owner, with the work thoroughly documented through photographs and supporting material.

It’s powered by the early 1,798 cc BMC Austin B-Series inline-four with twin SU carburettors, mated to a four-speed three-synchro manual gearbox and paired with 10.75-inch front discs. The engine is understood to have been fully rebuilt during its restoration and produces around 94 horsepower. As Cameron said in the video, “I don’t think anyone’s ever described an MGB as ruthless”.

The car rides wire wheels with whitewall tyres and has been resprayed in Pageant Blue, and boasts a particularly charming presentation. The black interior has been reupholstered, and the cabin largely retains the classic early MGB layout, but benefits from a Pioneer head unit.

It will be accompanied by extensive documentation, including a book, receipts and supporting USB drive chronicling the restoration work, as well as a poster that lays out its specification and significance.

The supplied data records chassis number G-HN3/17477, engine number 18UG-U-L/16224, body number 16453, and a build date of 30–31 July 1963. The odometer shows 77,545 miles.

A defining post-war British sports car, the MGB has gone on to become a classic for good reason, and is one of those cars that every motoring fan should experience at least once in their lifetime. Boasting an extensive restoration, this Shane Jacobson car presents as an honest, loved and enjoyed example, and we’re looking forward to entrusting it to a new custodian who we hope will enjoy it as much as Shane has.
