This 2017 Mercedes-AMG E 63 S 4MATIC+ is a well presented example of AMG’s era-defining W213-generation super saloon.

The E 63 S was the all-out version of the marque’s rambunctious executive sedan, equipped with a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 capable of 450 kW and 850 Nm in Australian specification. Power goes through AMG’s nine-speed SPEEDSHIFT MCT transmission into a fully variable 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system. The result is a five-seat luxury sedan capable of 0–100 km/h in around 3.4 seconds.

That 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system was a bit of a shock at the time, changing one of the core philosophies of the boisterous super saloon. Gone was the rear-wheel drive layout of earlier E63s, replaced with a seemingly more tame all-wheel drive system. 

However, the ‘S’ came with a trick up its sleeve - Drift Mode. When activated in ‘Race’ with ESP off and manual transmission selected, you’re back to full rear-wheel drive - a fact the mighty V8 is all-too-happy to remind you of with a tap of the throttle.
