1923 Fiat 501

Fast Facts:

  • A charming post-war tourer built around a simple side-valve four-cylinder engine, known for its durability and pleasant gearbox

The Details:

This 1923 Fiat 501 represents an appealing entry into vintage motoring, finished in white with black guards, cream wheels, a black folding roof and a caramel interior.

The 501 was introduced in 1919 and produced through the mid-1920s. Simple, durable and approachable, it helped establish Fiat’s reputation for practical touring cars during the vintage era. The cars found a welcoming audience here in Australia, built upon a reputation for reliability, with many bodied locally.

Period specification centred on a 1.5-litre side-valve four-cylinder engine, paired with a four-speed manual transmission. This car wears an open tourer body, with a folding roof that can be used open or closed.

The cabin is trimmed in caramel upholstery, with pleated bench seating front and rear, brown carpets, and a timber dashboard carrying period instrumentation including a Smiths speedometer, Fiat-branded oil-pressure gauge and Veglia ammeter and period switchgear.

The Fiat has been in the custodianship of the seller for the past 20 years, and is described as largely original and well looked after, having been stored in an enclosed garage. It is offered with handbooks, crank, partial service history and a collection of spares, and is understood to have been most recently serviced by D and D Mechanical.
