1996 AM General Hummer 'H1'

Fast Facts:

  • One of a small number of Hummer H1s officially right-hand drive converted and Australian-complied in period through Auto America Corp Pty Ltd

  • An instantly recognisable icon of the ‘90s, powered by a 6.5-litre diesel V8 and retaining much of the uncompromising engineering that went into the military vehicle on which it was based

The Details:

This AM General Hummer ‘H1’ is an unmistakable example of one of the most distinctive civilian off-road vehicles of the modern era, believed to be one of a small number of Hummers officially Australian-complied in period through Auto America Corp Pty Ltd.

The original Hummer was the civilian development of AM General’s HMMWV and retained much of the military vehicle’s uncompromising engineering, including its wide track, portal geared hubs, inboard brakes, high ground clearance and central tyre inflation system, which had carried it through the rigors of the Gulf War. Few civilian vehicles have arrived on the road with such direct military lineage.

The cars were produced following the end of the Gulf War, with a little under 12,000 believed to have been built between 1992 and 2006. It wasn't until 2006, when the original car was discontinued, that the more sanitised H2 and H3 began to be exported and sold around the world.

In the mid-90s here in Australia, however, Auto America Corp Pty Ltd in Perth had become experts in the import and export of right-hand drive Cadillacs and Lincolns, and developed a significant bank of specialised knowledge in the conversion and certification of North American cars. They applied this knowledge to the Hummer, along with 18 months of development and significant financial investment, and were awarded the rights by AM General to assemble, comply and distribute right-hand drive Hummers for the local market, as well as in Asia and Britain.

This 1996 model year right-hand drive example carries a compliance plate from Auto America Corp Pty Ltd and A.M. General Corp, noting Australian compliance in April 1998. It is understood to be one of those vehicles complied in period by Auto America Corp Pty Ltd in an official capacity, and not a later grey market or private import.

Power is supplied by the 6.5-litre diesel V8 paired with an automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. The cabin has been updated with tan trim, an aftermarket steering wheel, carbon fibre dash treatment and a modern Pioneer infotainment system.

The cars required significant modification both to complete the right-hand drive conversion and to make them compliant with Australian laws. This included dual headlamps and Australian bullbars, which this car wears.

This Hummer has been with the seller since 2021 and is understood to be accompanied by handbooks as well as service history for the past five years. There is no reported damage, and the vehicle is understood to have been repainted at some point in its history.

Boasting a fascinating history with a unique Australian link, this AM General Hummer H1 is a car as rugged as the Australian outback, and a genuine example of the original unfiltered Hummer. With very few of these original cars on Australian roads, and even fewer with this kind of provenance, it’s sure to appeal to fans of the era, or a driver looking for one of the toughest cars on the road.
