The Details:
As XC Falcon production wound down, Ford was left with a bit of a dilemma. It’s hard to imagine now, but coupes weren’t as popular at the time, and precisely 400 body shells remained unsold – a particular problem as the XD would ditch the two-door altogether.
Edsel Ford II, great-grandson of the company’s founder, was serving as assistant managing director of Ford Australia at the time and came up with a clever plan to get those shells sold. Capitalising on the brand’s legendary one-two finish at the 1977 Hardie-Ferodo 1000, the recipe was simple: add a sporty body kit, some stripes, and the iconic Shelby Cobra logo on the side.
Using what were somehow seen as unwanted leftovers at the time, he ended up creating what is now one of the most highly collectable Australian muscle cars.
All 400 cars were built in August 1978, with the first 200 powered by the 5.8-litre (351ci) Cleveland V8, while the latter 200 featured the 4.9-litre (302ci). Both were offered with the option of a manual or automatic transmission.
Offered for sale here is car 323, which features the 4.9-litre Cleveland backed by a three-speed automatic transmission. Presenting in excellent condition, it retains its correct body kit and 15-inch Bathurst Globe alloy wheels.
This car was also optioned with power steering and air conditioning, making it an incredibly usable example that is a true pleasure to drive, while also presenting in ideal condition for careful preservation.
Some minor but fitting performance upgrades have been added including a Holley 600 carburettor and adjustable Koni shock absorbers. Do note that the original Thermo-Quad carburettor and rocker covers are included in the sale.
Importantly, this numbers-matching car comes complete with its genuine logbooks, the congratulatory letter from sent to the original owner by the original dealer, the factory production build sheet and punch card, and the owner’s manual and service books.
Currently located south-east of Melbourne, the vehicle is on Victorian club registration.
For Blue Oval fans and collectors, this is an excellent example of the XC Cobra that is not to be missed.
