The Details:

Today, we’re pleased to present to you the dream - a true barn find and a significant artefact of Australian motoring history. This original matching numbers 1985 HDT VK SL Group A Brock Commodore, build #1776, has been confirmed genuine by HDT and is offered with full supporting documentation confirming its authenticity and original build specification.

HDT’s VK SL Group A Pack was born during a narrow and important window of Australian touring car racing history. It was an interstitial moment, with Australian Group C rules on their way out and set to be replaced by international Group A touring car regulations. This means that very few of the cars were built, with #1776 being one of approximately 50 HDT VK Commodore SL Group A examples.

The cars were based on the then-current SL Commodore and offered with a fairly basic kit as standard and a wide suite of options available. This particular car was very well specified from the factory, including a VT race numbered engine, long range fuel tank and Bilstein race suspension amongst other kit.

Four colours were available, with #1776 finished in Alpine White over a blue HDT sports interior and riding Irmscher alloy wheels. It’s also equipped with an HDT body kit, bonnet scoop, rear deck spoiler, side skirts, colour-coded front and rear bumpers and black chrome treatment.

This car was bought new from Melville Motors in Western Australia by Trevor Coates, who sadly passed away leaving it to his mother. She stored it in her backyard for some years, eventually agreeing to sell it to her son’s friend and neighbour. He in turn moved the car into his shed, where it sat for another two decades. Throughout this whole time the car’s WA registration was maintained.

With the car recently uncovered, we are proud to present it as a project in untouched matching numbers condition.

Finding an untouched, matching numbers Brock-era HDT VK SL Group A Commodore with factory documentation is no small feat, and this car presents a rare opportunity to restore a genuine Australian muscle car with outstanding provenance. Whether restored to concours standard or preserved as an authentic survivor, #1776 represents an increasingly scarce piece of HDT history that we’re looking forward to seeing restored to its former glory.
