1965 Ford Mustang Fastback - A Code Supercharged

Fast Facts:

  • A highly detailed cosmetic replica of a Shelby GT350, benefitting from a no-expense-spared bare metal nut-and-bolt restoration

  • The centrepiece is a charged 331 Dart Windsor small-block V8 in a tractable state of tune and producing an engine note for the ages

  • Built up from a genuine 1965 Ford Mustang A Code Fastback

The Details:

This 1965 Ford Mustang A Code Fastback ‘GT’ is a comprehensively developed restomod inspired by the almighty Shelby GT350 and powered by a supercharged 331 ci Windsor V8.

The Mustang began its life in Ford’s Dearborn plant, leaving the factory with the marque’s desirable A Code 289 ci four-barrel V8, C4 automatic transmission and a shorter diff ratio. It was also specified with ‘GT’ trimmings, which added rocker panel stripes, disc brakes and a five-gauge instrument cluster.

50-odd years later, in 2017, it was treated to a no-expense-spared bare-metal, nut-and-bolt rotisserie restoration, inspired by the iconic Shelby GT350. That work included refinishing it in Sapphire Blue with white Le Mans stripes, as well as extensive Shelby detailing, from the bonnet scoop and pins down to small details like its flexiglass quarter windows and the centre caps on its 15-inch Cragar wheels.

While it certainly looks magnificent, the real magic is under the hood. Power is courtesy of a built 331 Windsor small-block motor with a Dart block and a stroker kit, charged by a Paxton centrifugal supercharger. This is mated to a three-speed automatic transmission with a limited-slip differential at a 3.55:1 ratio.

The car is equipped with power steering and brakes, and has been lowered with genuine Shelby springs at the front and lowered leaves at the rear. Our driving test found it compliant and comfortable, with a beautifully smooth engine and transmission - and did we mention that soundtrack?

The Fastback presents beautifully inside and out, with only a few thousand kilometres travelled since the restoration was completed. The only note we’ve been given is that the fuel gauge is presently inoperative.

This 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback is a genuine A Code GT, built up to recall the legendary Shelby GT350 and powered by a supercharged 5.4-litre V8. With only a few thousand kilometres on the clock since work was completed, and offering that awe inspiring engine note, we’re sure you’ll be as enraptured as we are.
