1990 Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9L

Fast Facts:

  • A well equipped Australian delivered example, finished in Cherry Red and riding 14-inch Speedline alloy wheels

  • Significant, documented recent maintenance work

The Details:

This 1990 Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9 presents as an unusually original and period correct example of one of history’s defining hot hatches.

The 205 family arrived in 1983, followed by the 1.6-litre GTI in 1984 and the 1.9 in 1986. Feather light, with a cracking chassis, a tendency for lift-off oversteer and happy little 1,905 cc inline four, it was practical, fun, and relatively attainable as well.

This car is Australian delivered, with local emissions requirements requiring its 1,905 cc SOHC four-cylinder engine be tuned to approximately 75 kW. An eagerness to rev combined with a kerb weight of around 900 kg, five-speed manual gearbox and quick, unassisted steering allowed that to be plenty for a good time.

Built in February 1990 and sold on Williams street in Sydney, this Series II is finished in Cherry Red over a red and black ‘Monaco’ cloth cabin with the updated dashboard introduced with the Australian Series II. It rides 14-inch Speedline alloy wheels, which were more commonly found on the lower-powered 1.6-litre GTI and are fitted with Yokohama C-Drive 2 tyres. Some chips are noted on the front bumper and hood.

Equipment includes a sunroof, power steering, air conditioning, front fog lights, electric front windows, heated rear screen, and a Peugeot branded tape player. The radio is currently locked, but the seller has the reset code available and prefers to listen to the natural soundtrack instead.

The odometer reads 114,290 km and we understand the car to have been with the seller for approximately two years. It will be accompanied by a reported full service history, as well as a handbook, service booklet, service paperwork, one remote and two keys.

This 205 GTI was most recently serviced by CMR Automotive at 113,900 km, who also replaced both front swing arms in December 2025. Automasters replaced the alternator belt and front bushes in March 2025 at 112,000 km.

Other recent work includes an oil and filter change by Rye Performance and Mechanical at 110,000 km in November 2021 and an engine oil change, gearbox and differential oil change, and coolant change in November 2020. In November 2019 new silicone hoses, front brake discs and pads, rear brake shoes, and cam belt were fitted, and a new starter motor in 2020. A new genuine Peugeot driveshaft was reportedly fitted in 2010 at around 96,000 km.

This 1990 Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 presents as a well cared for example of the iconic hot hatch, and an enticing opportunity to experience a bucket list driver’s car.
