  • Currently on a run-in tune, with the seller offering to have it tuned ahead of sale

The Details:

This 1987 Nissan Skyline HR31 GTS-X is a comprehensively built, competition-style example of the JDM icon, benefitting from a fresh rebuild and a list of parts a mile long.

This 1987 HR31 Skyline started life as a GTS-X, with chassis number HR31-094874 visible both on the body and factory identification plate. The latter records its original specification with the RB20DET 1,998 cc engine, FS5W71C five-speed transmission and RC43 axle. Little of that original drivetrain remains, however, following one of the most extensive builds we’ve seen.

Reportedly built by Fenick Race Engines, the engine is based on a 3.0-litre RB30 bottom end using JE pistons, Nitto connecting rods, King Racing bearings, ARP hardware and an ASR Race/Circuit sump. This is topped by an RB26 cylinder head reportedly sourced from a low-mileage R34 GT-R engine and converted to a shimless valvetrain with A’PEXi V-Max 270-degree cams, upgraded springs and retainers, bronze valve guides and OS Giken adjustable cam gears.

Forced induction comes from a Precision 6870 Gen 2 turbocharger mounted to a Full-Race twin-scroll T4 exhaust manifold and controlled by twin TiAL MVR wastegates. A Hypertune plenum, throttle body and dual-feed fuel rail form part of an extensive intake and fuel system, with the car configured to run E85

  • We understand the car to be currently tuned to 800 hp at 28 psi running on E85, with a previous tune offering approximately 610 hp at 17 psi. Following the latest rebuild, the engine remains on a run-in tune, with the seller offering to have it tuned ahead of sale.

Cooling is handled by a custom PWR cross-flow radiator with fabricated swirl pot and header tank. Fuel is supplied from a 35-litre JAZ cell through a Carter Black lift pump, custom surge tank, twin Pierburg 360 pumps and Bosch 1600 cc injectors. An Aviaid external oil pump, large Canton Accusump, Serck oil cooler and remote filtration also feature.

Engine management is by an Autronic SM4 ECU and 500R CDI, supplemented by an AiM MXL display and AiM Evo4 data logger. The car has also been completely rewired with Deutsch connectors and a firewall bulkhead connection, together with a custom fuse and relay system and carbon fibre switch panel. The engine loom can be disconnected at the firewall to simplify engine removal.

Power reaches the rear wheels through an R34 GT-T transmission rebuilt with a PAR straight-cut 1st-4th gearset, an OS Giken quad-plate clutch and an R200 differential fitted with a Cusco two-way LSD. The suspension, steering and brakes have received similarly extensive attention, with adjustable coilovers, revised front hubs and geometry, adjustable rear arms, Alcon four-piston front brakes and Brembo R34 GT-R rear calipers.

Externally, dry carbon flares with aluminium aircraft-style hardware from Pro-Bolt, an East Bear vented FRP bonnet and mirrors and a new-old-stock GTS-R-style front bumper accompany a custom black repaint with metallic flake. The seller describes the finish as presentable, with some small stone chips and marks evident.

The competition cabin is stripped of its original sound deadening and fitted with OMP WRC fixed back seats and harnesses, an OMP quick release steering wheel, bolt-in roll cage, fabricated aluminium rear firewall and door trims and a flocked dashboard.

The HR31 is offered fresh from a ground-up rebuild, with items including the brake master cylinder, differential, driveshafts, pedal assemblies, cross-members and numerous supporting components rebuilt, renewed or refinished. The car is offered without service history and approximately 1,000 km reported since the rebuild.
