The Details:
This 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 is a well documented and genuine matching numbers example of the highly desirable homologation special, offered in restored condition retaining most of its original components, from the care of a 25 year ownership.
Developed with Vince Piggins at the helm to take Chevrolet into the early years of SCCA Trans-Am competition, the Z/28 combined a strong, high revving small block V8 with sophisticated chassis development and weight reduction. In racing form, it found great success in the hands of Penske and Mark Donohue, particularly in 1968 and 1969, contributing to its legendary status.
This car is understood to have been assembled at Chevrolet’s Norwood, Ohio plant, its VIN 124379N684757 accompanied by a Fisher body tag carrying the sought-after X33 Z/28 code and D80 spoiler designation. Paint code 76 denotes Daytona Yellow, which is contrasted with black Z/28 stripes, while trim code 714 identifies the matching yellow Houndstooth bucket seat interior.
According to the previous owner, who cared for it between 1980 and 2001, it arrived in Australia in 1970. It was professionally converted to right-hand drive using its original GM components, including the steering column, Saginaw steering box and power steering pump.
The Camaro has remained with its current owner for approximately 25 years, with paperwork documenting its acquisition in Western Australia in 2001 at approximately 21,934 miles.
It has undergone a more recent comprehensive restoration, with an emphasis placed on originality. More than 80% of its factory components are understood to have been reused, and all removed original components were retained and will accompany the sale. Throughout the restoration, hidden partial VIN stampings were documented, along with all major components, to ensure transparency and traceability. Some evidence of an earlier right-rear quarter repair was identified during restoration.
Paintwork was refreshed back to its original Daytona Yellow with black striping using the correct single stage acrylic paint, although its black vinyl roof was removed and a cowl hood has been fitted in place of the flat bonnet understood to have been fitted originally.
The Z/28 still features its original glass throughout, date coded Sun-Ray tinted as per factory. Its steel trim mouldings, badges, lenses and side markers are also all original. Front and rear spoilers, Z/28 badging and original 15-inch YH-coded Rally wheels with correct hubcaps and trims complete the exterior.
The Deluxe Houndstooth interior is reported to be largely original, with the front seats refreshed with new correct seat covers and new old stock carpets and headliner fitted. The dash, all original door cards, handles, console and gauges, the original rosewood steering wheel, and date-coded Hamilton seat belts and shoulder restraints remain and are understood to be in excellent condition.
The original ‘010’ DZ 302 ci block with partial VIN stamping is in place, as is the matching M20 Muncie four-speed transmission with VIN stamping. This is mated to the original 12-bolt rear end with 3.73 ratio Positraction rear axle (casting 3969341NF).
Other engine bay details include original alloy rocker covers, Harrison radiator, brake booster, deep groove pullets and the original aluminium high-rise intake manifold. Power steering is fitted, and the car is equipped with front disc brakes with original calipers and dust covers, and rear drums.
To make the car more drivable on modern roads, a new correct Holley DZ carburettor and extractors have been installed.
Its accompanying documentation includes an NCRS Shipping Data Report, Australian vehicle import approval, details of the car’s second owner, owner’s manual, historic log books and factory assembly manual as well as significant documentation created during restoration.
A partial service history accompanies the car alongside some receipts. Some rare related books will also be included in the sale.
The seller notes that the clock and radio are presently inoperative, together with one or two minor touched-in paint chips.
This 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 represents a vanishingly rare opportunity to acquire an exceptional example of the legendary American homologation special. Highly original, matching numbers with documented history and outstanding provenance, it is sure to find an audience amongst collectors, investors and enthusiasts alike.
