2004 Porsche GT3 Cup Car

Fast Facts:

  • 2004 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, representing the final and most developed evolution of the 996 Cup car, with a 287 kW/390 PS 3.6-litre flat-six, six-speed H-pattern manual gearbox and four-channel race ABS

  • Accompanied by Motorsport Australia log books and substantial maintenance records, including a documented engine rebuild in 2013, major clutch and driveline work in 2022 and a March 2025 leakdown test recording just 0 - 2%

The Details:

Before sequential gearboxes, paddle shifts and layers of electronic assistance became the norm, Porsche’s GT3 Cup was a distinctly analogue affair. It reached its ideal form in 2004, with a water cooled naturally aspirated 3.6-litre flat six producing 287 kW/390 PS and 390 Nm, driving the rear wheels through a six-speed H-pattern manual gearbox. At approximately 1,150kg, it was a light, mechanical and remarkably straightforward track weapon.

This example, chassis WP0ZZZ99Z4S698009, has a substantial competition history supported by Motorsport Australia log books, maintenance records and an extensive history file. The supplied documentation records the car as being run by Auckland based International Motorsport NZ in the 2004 Australian Carrera Cup, principally for Paul Pedersen under Lakesawn Lumber sponsorship, with Matt Halliday also driving during the season. Period results confirm Pedersen finished eighth in the championship and was the highest placed New Zealand driver, while Halliday also competed for International Motorsport during the year. It is understood to be the championship-winning car in the New Zealand Porsche GT3 Cup championship.

Following that season, the Porsche remained with International Motorsport in New Zealand, with associations to Craig Baird, Glenn Cotterill and Halliday. Baird pedalled the car during the 2005/06 and 2006/07 New Zealand GT3 Cup seasons.

The records note a front end impact during its time in New Zealand, after which the car was placed into storage. In 2011 it was brought to Melbourne by Porsche Club Victoria member Brian Power with approximately 10,000 km recorded, and returned to race condition. Power subsequently used it in Victorian State Circuit Racing and Porsche Club events before the car was again stored for around two and a half years.

Porsche Club Victoria Competition Director Andrew Smith acquired the Porsche in April 2018 at approximately 14,100 km and returned it to regular Porsche Club Victoria sprint competition, with maintenance entrusted principally to Cascone Auto Sport. The seller took over the car in August 2022 at approximately 19,900 km, continuing to use the car in Porsche Club Victoria sprint events, including Phillip Island, Sandown, Winton, Broadford and The Bend.

The GT3 cup will be accompanied by impressively detailed maintenance documentation. Art of Auto rebuilt the engine at 11,656 km in May 2013, with work including connecting rod bolts and bearings, timing chain and tensioner and connecting rod resizing. A 2020 compression test recorded more than 170 psi across all six cylinders, while substantial work in October 2022 included the clutch, flywheel, release bearing, rear main seal, clutch fork and associated hardware, together with a rebuilt starter motor.

At 21,627 km in August 2024, the engine and gearbox were removed while investigating an idle issue, with the intake hoses replaced along with engine and gearbox oils, spark plugs, coolant and fuel filter. The left-rear wheel carrier and bearing were also renewed, and minor fatigue cracking around the driver’s seat mounts was repaired. Most recently, a March 2025 leakdown test at 21,735 km recorded 2% on cylinder one and 0% on the remaining five cylinders. The supplied records document more than $100,000 in maintenance, replacement parts and competition consumables since 2011.

Now showing approximately 22,500 km, the GT3 Cup is presented in white with its current Martini Racing-style livery, centre-lock BBS racing wheels and stripped competition cockpit with fixed-back racing seats, harnesses, roll cage and fire suppression equipment. Importantly, it also retains the four-channel ABS system characteristic of this Cup specification.

It will be sold with a collection of available parts including three sets of original BBS wheels, an air spike, a large torque wrench for the wheel nut, all Motec lap timing gear, full printed manual as well as an electronic USB manual, some used brake pads with life left in them and some other miscellaneous items.

Accompanied by its Motorsport Australia log books and extensive history covering maintenance, competition and ownership, this 996 GT3 Cup boasts genuine period Carrera Cup provenance across two decades of documented competition use and would suit an enthusiast looking for a cared for, properly analogue Porsche race car.
