The Details:
By 1969 Ford’s first generation Mustang had evolved considerably, with competition in the world of pony cars heating up as they continued to prove popular. Against this backdrop, the Mach 1 arrived with distinctive fastback styling and a host of visual and mechanical upgrades.
This 1972 example wears Ford VIN, 2F05F107423, and its surviving door certification label identifies it as a genuine 1972 Mach 1 SportsRoof built at Ford’s Dearborn plant with New York District Sales Office delivery. Its manufacture date is shown as August 1971, consistent with early 1972 model year production.
Power is courtesy of the standard Ford 302 ci V8 with a two-barrel carburettor. This drives the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic paired with a 3.00:1 conventional differential. This car has been fitted with a Magflo H exhaust system, and Mach 1s received Ford’s Competition Suspension, with uprated springs and dampers.
The car has been repainted in blue with contrasting silver accents, and retains the model’s characteristic styling including the twin-scoop bonnet, honeycomb grille, front spoiler and Mach 1 striping. A rear spoiler and rear window Sports Slats are also fitted, together with later polished five-spoke Mustang alloy wheels.
The seller describes the paintwork as fair, noting some chips together with areas of rust in the doors. No accident damage is known to the seller.
Inside, the cabin is trimmed in contrasting white with a black dashboard and centre console. It also features a fold-down rear seat, auxiliary gauges and later audio equipment. The seller describes the interior condition as fair and notes that the dashboard illumination is somewhat dull. The driver’s window is understood to have a fault, for which replacement components have been ordered from the United States, and new mirrors have also been ordered to correct a creak in the driver’s door.
The Mach 1 has been in the care of the seller for the past two and a half years, with mileage reported at approximately 22,500 miles. During that time it has been serviced by Country Autos in Tamworth, with recent work including replacement brakes, brake pads and brake lines, a new master cylinder, radiator, suspension components and shocks, together with replacement exhaust manifold gaskets.
The seller describes the car as a dependable cruiser, recounting a recent trip from Tamworth to Dayboro which it handled like a dream. It will be accompanied by the original service book.
This 1972 Ford Mustang Mach 1 presents as an honest example of the desirable early Mach 1, with a recent comprehensive service and a good run under its belt, ready for more adventures.
