The Details:
This 1990 Porsche 911 (964) Carrera 2 Cabriolet is an honestly presented, Australian delivered example of the classic 911.
The 964 generation marked the most extensive re-engineering of the 911 since its introduction in 1964, with the marque stating that around 85% of the car was new. Coil springs replaced torsion bars, ABS and power steering were introduced, aerodynamics were significantly improved and a sophisticated all-wheel-drive system debuted with the Carrera 4 for the 1989 model year.. The 964 also introduced one of the model’s most recognisable technical details - an automatically extending rear spoiler, which rises at speed before retracting again when the car slows.
The rear-wheel drive Carrera 2 arrived slightly later, in time for the 1990 model year, and brought back the 911’s distinctive rear-engined rear-wheel drive layout. This Carrera 2 Cabriolet was built in October 1989 and Australian complied in December 1989 for the 1990 model year. Wearing a black finish over a matching black cabin, it rides 16-inch Porsche Design 90 alloy wheels.
Hanging over the rear wheels is Porsche’s naturally aspirated 3.6-litre air-cooled flat six, producing 184 kW and 310 Nm in period specification. It drives the rear wheels through a five-speed Getrag G50 manual.
The cabin remains largely period-correct in appearance, with age-related creasing visible to the leather seats. Equipment includes air conditioning, electrically adjustable front seats, electric windows and the electrically operated convertible roof. An aftermarket Kenwood head unit has been fitted in place of the original audio unit.
The odometer shows 164,534 km. The car has been with its present owner for approximately two years and is understood to be accompanied by partial service history. Its most recent reported service is understood to have been completed by German Sports Cars in July 2026.
A black tonneau cover is included for use with the roof lowered, together with a Porsche-branded car cover.
With its naturally aspirated air-cooled flat-six, five-speed manual transmission and rear-engine, rear-wheel drive layout, this early Carrera 2 Cabriolet represents a refined evolution of the classic 911 that retains the charm and character that made the earlier cars special.
