The Details:

Developed jointly by Porsche and Volkswagen, the 914 arrived for the 1970 model year as a compact mid-engined sports car with a removable roof panel, pop-up headlights and notably short overhangs. The four cylinder 914 was built by Karmann at Osnabrück, with Porsche adding 1.8 and 2.0-litre versions as the model evolved. 

This example carries chassis number 4752904690, identifying it as a 1975 model year 914. Originally left-hand drive, it has been professionally converted to right-hand drive and maintained in the care of the seller for approximately five years.

The Karmann body plate records body number 151904 and paint code L13K, corresponding with the yellow finish the car wears today. The body is reported to have received a comprehensive repaint during previous ownership, extending through the luggage compartments, engine bay and underside, and the seller describes considerable expenditure across the car prior to their ownership.

This car’s mid-mounted 1.9-litre flat four was rebuilt in July 2022 after a failed valve guide damaged a piston, with a complete barrel and piston set fitted by a well known Adelaide service centre. It’s fed by twin carburettors, with power going to the rear wheels via a five-speed manual transmission.

Porsche describes the 914 as the car that brought its racing-derived mid-engine layout into series production, and it’s the handling that makes the car special - both in its outright performance and distinction from the rear-engined 911. Beneath the compact Karmann body, the 914 used a fully independent chassis with torsion bar front suspension, semi-trailing arms and coil springs at the rear, rack-and-pinion steering and disc brakes on all four corners.

The exterior of this car retains the characteristic 914 low waistline, removable Targa roof panel and pop-up headlights, together with the larger black safety bumpers introduced for the 1975 model year. It rides on four-stud alloy wheels and presents in bright yellow with contrasting black roof and lower trim. 

Inside, the right-hand drive conversion incorporates a reshaped dashboard and instrument arrangement while retaining the simple character of the original cabin. The upholstery shows some age related creasing and wear consistent with use.

To improve performance, this 914 was serviced and given a general check-over before being dyno tuned in May 2024. The carburettor linkages were adjusted and modified to improve their operation when both cold and hot. An invoice and dyno sheet documenting this work are included with the car, with the seller estimating that it has travelled approximately 500 kilometres since.

The car is accompanied by partial service history and an extensive collection of Porsche 914 reference material, including manuals and technical literature. A Porsche 914 Driver’s Manual/Maintenance Record is included, although the seller advises that this is not the original belonging to this particular car. A tool roll and associated equipment are also included.

Benefitting from a well executed and thorough repaint, recent 2022 engine rebuild and even more recent carburettor and dyno work, this 914 presents as an attractive and usable example of Porsche’s early lightweight mid-engined sports car.
