The Details:

Introduced during the XA Falcon’s relatively short production run, the Superbird was a limited production version of Ford’s Australian-designed two-door Falcon 500 Hardtop. Equipped with the RPO 77 package, it was built around a 302 ci Cleveland V8 and sports suspension, also featuring the GS Rally Pack instrumentation, rear window louvre, distinctive two-tone paintwork and Superbird graphics. Ford advertised a production run of 750 cars, although historical sources suggest the actual total may have been lower, and certainly fewer remain on the road today.

The 1973 Ford XA Falcon 500 Superbird Hardtop you see here was completed in April 1973 and carries chassis number JG65NM80676K. Its factory identification plate records model 18213, engine code Y, transmission code B, Polar White paint code 3 and white trim code W. These correspond with a Falcon 500 Hardtop, factory 302 ci V8 and automatic transmission.

Today, the Superbird is presented in Polar White and Cosmic Blue, with large 302 front quarter graphics, Superbird rear quarter decals and a rear window louvre. It currently rides aftermarket multi-piece alloy wheels, while the seller advises that a full set of correct Superbird wheels will be included in the sale.

Power is courtesy of an aftermarket 450 CNC cast headed 351 ci V8, which the seller advises features upgraded cylinder heads, Holley induction and extractors.

The seller reports that the original matching numbers 302 has been retained and will accompany the sale. They advise that the motor has been professionally rebuilt by Garry Treblecci of Motor Man Cave in Shepparton, receiving new rings, bearings, lifters and camshaft among other work.

The automatic transmission has also been rebuilt, by Burko Auto Trans in Shepparton, and incorporates a 2,500 rpm stall converter. The original differential is no longer fitted, with the car now using a limited-slip differential and disc brakes.

Looking inside, the white-trimmed cabin retains its period GS-style sports instrumentation, centre console and automatic floor shift. The black dashboard contrasts with the white seating and door trim, while an aftermarket Alpine stereo has been fitted.

The Superbird has been in the care of the seller for approximately 14 years, and they report no known accident damage. The car is understood to have undergone restoration approximately seven years ago and has been maintained by its owner since, with tuning and specialist work carried out by Dallas Automotive in Shepparton. Its most recent reported maintenance work was completed there on 5 May 2025 and included ignition timing, tuning and carburettor servicing.

The Superbird has become a particularly recognisable and desirable Aussie muscle car, with original and complete examples becoming increasingly rare to find. This car retains its original matching numbers 302 and a set of correct Superbird wheels, and benefits from significant mechanical refreshment and a more powerful 351 Cleveland.
