The Details:

This 1971 Ford XY Fairmont GT is a genuine South African assembled example of Ford’s export Falcon GT, finished in Vermillion Fire over a black interior and indicating 73,230 km. 

Carrying chassis number 33380, this car’s original Ford South Africa identification plate records the MS33 GT designation, 351 ci Cleveland V8 and automatic transmission, while accompanying Australian import documentation traces the car’s arrival in Australia to 2004.

Developed from the Australian XY Falcon GT, the South African cars were supplied for local assembly and sold under the Fairmont name as it was believed to be better known in that market. Mechanically, they retained much of the Australian GT specification, while differing in some exterior and interior details. The XY Fairmont GT has subsequently become colloquially known as the ‘Super Rhino’, referencing the rhinoceros motif used on the South African GT striping in place of Australia’s familiar Super Roo. 

This Fairmont has been repainted in Vermillion Fire contrasted by a black roof, black GT style striping and redline tyres over steel wheels with full wheel covers. The seller identifies the bumper over riders and Falcon branding as later additions. Small areas of rust are noted at the door corners, together with several isolated blemishes within the paint which the seller attributes to moisture contamination when it was applied.

Inside, the black cabin retains the GT dashboard, console, wood rim steering wheel and metric instrumentation characteristic of the South African cars. An aftermarket under dash air conditioning system has been fitted, while the seller also advises that the seat belt buckles are replacements.

The car is accompanied by a significant collection of documentation, including an Australian Government Vehicle Import Approval dated 24 August 2004 that lists this 1971 Ford Fairmont under chassis number 33380, with Queensland modification documentation following later that year. The file also contains a 2013 Falcon GT Club of Australia inspection certificate identifying the car as an XY GT, together with further club material relating to South African Fairmont GTs.

Lance Mechanics is understood to have carried out a service, tune, carburettor overhaul, fuel replacement and air filter replacement on 24 July 2026, followed by ignition points, timing and further carburettor tuning work on 19 August 2026. The seller advises that the brakes have also recently been attended to.

The car has been with the seller for approximately two years and is reported to have always been garaged during their ownership, only having done a reported 20,000 km in the past two decades. It is reported to start easily and run well, with just the boot latch understood to be inoperative.

An interesting artifact of our once booming automotive industry, this 1971 XY Fairmont GT has its own unique character and history, while benefitting from much of what made the Ford XY Falcon GT such an icon.
