The Details:
Described by the seller as a very usable tough cruiser, this 1964 Ford Thunderbird has come a long way since it rolled out of Ford’s Wixom plant. Converted to right hand drive and finished in Diamond White over an Aqua Blue vinyl interior, it shows 10,773 miles and combines a largely period presentation with a monster 444 ci FE big block V8, upgraded transmission and front discs.
The Thunderbird was originally equipped with a 390 ci Thunderbird Special V8, rated at 300 hp, also featuring power steering, power brakes and a Cruise-O-Matic automatic as standard. This car’s 4Y83Z173089 chassis number leads us to believe that it originally left Ford’s Wixom, Michigan plant as a 390 ci four barrel Hardtop.
That FE big block has since been stretched from 390 ci to 444 ci (approximately 7.3 litres) and fitted with alloy cylinder heads, custom extractors and upgraded induction. The engine bay has been chrome dressed and features upgraded ignition, a custom cooling system with thermo fans and a remote engine cut out.
Behind the V8 is a rebuilt C6 three speed automatic, fitted with a stall converter and controlled through a B&M shifter incorporated into the centre console. Front disc brakes have also been added in place of the Thunderbird’s original drum arrangement.
Originally cream, the body has been refinished in Ford Diamond White, which the seller reports to be in good condition. Externally, the car remains comparatively restrained, retaining its extensive period brightwork, Thunderbird badging, full wheel covers and period whitewall tyres.
The Aqua Blue cabin is reported to be in great condition and mixes the original distinctive 1964 Thunderbird design, including its broad horizontal speedometer, wraparound dashboard and bright centre console, with some performance nods. The right hand drive conversion is complemented by a wood rim steering wheel, while additional AutoMeter instrumentation and a large tachometer provide more thorough engine monitoring. A retro style radio and the prominent B&M shifter complete the interior.
The seller advises that the car is accompanied by three Victorian Club Permit log books and partial service history. It is currently registered on Victorian Club Permit 99264-H and has remained with the seller for around eight years.
The platonic ideal of a ‘sleeper’, this 1964 Ford Thunderbird is reported to be a strong and usable car, with a period presentation belying its impressive capability.
