1966 Ford Mustang GT350H Tribute - K Code

Fast Facts:

  • Genuine 1966 K Code Mustang Fastback

  • Updated in tribute to the Shelby GT350H, finished in metallic green with gold Le Mans stripes, Shelby styling and five-spoke wheels

  • Replacement 289 ci V8 paired with automatic transmission and air conditioning

The Details:

This 1966 Ford Mustang K-code Fastback is presented in Shelby GT350H tribute styling, finished in metallic green with gold Le Mans stripes and GT350H graphics. Originally built with Ford’s desirable High Performance 289 V8, it now features a replacement 289 ci engine, automatic transmission and air conditioning.

Chassis number 6T09K102476 identifies this car as a 1966 Mustang Fastback manufactured in Ford’s Metuchen, New Jersey assembly plant. The K engine designation confirms that it originally left the factory with the High Performance 289 ci four-barrel V8, rated at 271 hp, a specification that provided the mechanical foundation for the Shelby GT350.

For 1966, Shelby American partnered with Hertz to introduce the GT350H, allowing Hertz Sports Car Club members to rent a genuine Shelby GT350H for the princely sum of $17 per day, plus 17 cents per mile. The Rent-a-Racer programme would become famous for stories of customers taking the cars to the track before returning them to Hertz.

Approximately 1,000 of the cars are believed to have been built, predominantly in Raven Black and gold, although smaller numbers were finished in other colours, including Ivy Green.

This Mustang takes its inspiration from those cars, with metallic green bodywork contrasted by gold Le Mans stripes. Matching GT350H side graphics are accompanied by a bonnet scoop, bonnet pins, Shelby grille treatment, rear quarter windows and prominent side scoops. Five-spoke wheels with grey centres and polished rims complete the look.

Power is courtesy of a 289 ci V8 and delivered to the rear wheels via an automatic transmission. The engine is understood to be a replacement unit.

Inside, the black cabin is equipped with black bucket seats featuring patterned inserts, matching door trims and woodgrain dashboard detailing. Shelby-inspired additions include a wood-rimmed three-spoke steering wheel and an AutoMeter tachometer mounted ahead of the factory instrumentation. An under dash air conditioning system and JVC audio unit have also been fitted.

The car is reported to have covered 46,657 miles and has been with the seller for approximately three years. It is currently unregistered and located in Plenty, Victoria.

This 1966 Ford Mustang is a genuine K-code Fastback, updated as a tribute to the distinctive Shelby GT350H, making it an interesting interpretation of one of the most recognisable American performance cars of the 1960s.
