The Details
What do you get when you combine an Italian company with an Argentine founder, a French name, and an Australian-made engine of American design? This stunning 1979 De Tomaso Longchamp is the answer.
Only 409 examples of the Longchamp were built between 1972-89, meaning it has largely lived in the shadows of the better-known, mid-engine Pantera.
Designed by Tom Tjaarda at Ghia, the Longchamp platform later underpinned the Maserati Kyalami and Quattroporte III, with styling cues shared with the former, as De Tomaso owned the trident brand at the time.
However, the De Tomaso was packing muscle car performance underneath in the form of Ford’s 5.8-litre (351ci) ‘Cleveland’ V8 as also used in the Pantera.
While early cars featured US-built engines, De Tomaso began sourcing Geelong-built V8s following the 1973 global oil crisis. Initially, these engines were only used for Australian and Swiss-market cars, but very were soon after used in every car De Tomaso made globally.
As with most examples of the Longchamp, this red over beige car features Ford’s three-speed ‘C6’ automatic transmission, and rides on independent double wishbone suspension both front and rear.
This car presents in very good condition inside and out, although two small rust bubbles under the paint on the rear-right quarter panel should be noted.
Inside, all electronics and switchgear works, with the fitment of an Alpine head unit with Bluetooth the only obvious interior upgrade. Otherwise, the car has been kept in its original specification.
With a unique blend of Italian style and Aussie-American muscle, this Longchamp is a truly unique creature, but one that certainly presents a very attractive recipe.
