The Details:
This Volkswagen Type 2 Kombi is a fetching, recently mechanically refurbished example of the iconic split-window Microbus, finished in blue and white with a retrimmed brown interior. Reportedly Australian-delivered, it’s powered by a recently fitted 1,776 cc air-cooled flat-four with extensively refurbished running gear.
Introduced in 1950, the Type 2 quickly established itself as one of the most versatile vehicles of the post-war era. Its distinctive split windscreen, rear-mounted engine and practical interior made it equally suited to commercial, passenger and recreational use, and over time it became one of the most enduring popular culture icons of the motoring world.
This example is fresh from a comprehensive refurbishment and upgrade, completed by Indian Automotive in Penrith at a cost of nearly $50,000 with invoice available. The work included fitment of a complete 1,776 cc engine, replacement gearbox and lowered front beam with brake booster, with the drivetrain and gear shift componentry repaired or replaced. The original reduction box drivetrain was replaced by CV-jointed independent rear suspension, and the braking system reconditioned, with new calipers, master cylinder, pads, hoses, pipes, fittings and other components.
Repainted in blue and white, the 11-window body features the iconic split windscreen and the vehicle rides on polished five-spoke alloy wheels. Restoration work included replacement of the windscreen wiper switch, petrol flap lock and grommets, engine lid lock and hinge seals, dash knobs, church key, tailgate T-handle and pop-out side window seals.
The seller describes the repainted exterior as presenting in good condition, noting a small paint chip on a rear corner.
Inside, the cabin has been retrimmed in brown upholstery, with matching bench seating and door panels, a white dashboard and steering wheel and black rubber flooring. A split-screen speedometer with trip meter and vacuum pipe was installed during the restoration.
The vehicle is accompanied by a partial service history, without its original handbooks. The replacement odometer displays zeros; the vehicle’s total mileage is unknown. It is offered unregistered.
This Volkswagen Type 2 Split-Window Kombi is a lovely, restored example of the icon, offered with all the time consuming work done, ready for its next adventure.
