The Details:
This 1948 Bentley Mark VI ‘Mallilieu Special’ is one of 37 re-bodied by Derrie Mallilieu in 1974 in the United Kingdom. It features an upgraded 1955 4.9-litre Bentley S1 engine, and has been enjoyed around the world in vintage touring.
Even amongst typically storied vintage vehicles, this car has led an interesting life. It was built and delivered into the UK, eventually moving alongside its owner to Hong Kong, where it stayed for some 10 years, and then on to Northern NSW. From there it was sold to a gentleman in Queensland, where it was registered under 143RMY. When it came time for the owner to move to the United States, they decided not to undertake the complex conversion to left-hand drive, ensuring that the Bentley stayed in Australia.
The car was then acquired by a Bentley Club enthusiast in Western Australia who, with the arrival of a late model Bentley GT and a garage space crisis, offered it for sale privately. It was acquired by the present owner about six years ago, moving to Melbourne where it resides today.
The vehicle has been conscientiously upgraded for club use, including a tour around Tasmania that served as a test for a longer tour in Japan - the ‘Rising Sun Rally 2024’. Before it left for Japan, it also successfully completed a track day at Sandown International Motor Raceway. The Japanese rally was a great success, and the Bentley covered upwards of 4,500 kilometres without any mechanical issues.
This Bentley benefits from the installation of a 1955 4.9-litre Bentley S1 engine, which replaced the original 4.25-litre motor. The new engine was further refined, including porting and polishing the head. A new crown wheel and pinion was installed for top end performance, and a new clutch pressure plate fit.
Handling wise and usage wise, the mechanical rear brakes have been updated with a hydraulic system, the rear springs and shocks done and an electronic engine fan installed.
This vehicle is finished in cream over a cream interior, with colour matched wire wheels. The finish, brightwork, tonneau, roof and trunk present very well, with the expected minor stone chips and some marks on the roof struts noted.
Likewise, the cream interior has been well maintained, with the wood dash and steering wheel a highlight and contrasting brown carpets presenting well. There is some wear to the handbrake and gear selector surrounds, as well as the inside door panels.
Following the successful completion of the Rising Sun Rally, the Bentley was shipped back to the UK, where it was enjoyed in club and rally events throughout Europe, eventually brought home to Victoria, where it is made available for the next exciting chapter of its storied history.
The owner reports a consistent service record, which will accompany the vehicle.
Conscientiously prepared and upgraded for club rally use and consistently maintained, this 1948 Bentley Mark VI ‘Mallilieu Special’ represents a wonderful entry into the vibrant world of vintage and classic rallying with a proven track record of enjoyment.
