The Details:
There are few modified cars that come with as clear and extensive a history as this exceptional 1968 Holden Monaro, which has been thoroughly reworked to award-winning standard in a ‘pro-touring style’.
This car started out in life as a Melbourne-built base model HK Monaro, finished in Ermine White with Goya Red trim. The original tags noting this remain fitted to the vehicle.
In 2011, it was purchased from the New South Wales’ Southern Highlands as a rolling shell, and over the following years was transformed into the stunning GTS-style build you see here. It was first registered in its current form in December 2014.
Now painted in a custom version of Warwick Yellow with correct GTS striping, the extensive bodywork and painting was completed in August 2012, with some minor rectifications in December 2025.
In 2016, this car won the ‘Outstanding Car’ in the Show N’ Shine at Summernats 2016; it has also claimed numerous awards at local events since then. It’s easy to see why when you take even just a quick look at the work performed to this car.
Many of the subtle bodywork changes – such as relieving and reinforcing the bonnet frame, and raising the boot floor – was done to accommodate an immense new engine and driveline.
Powered by an extensively rebuilt 5.7-litre ‘Gen III’ LS1 V8 from a 2003 VY Commodore SS, the engine features decked heads, shaved valve seats, LSA metal gaskets, ARP Pro Series head studs, Comp Cams LSR hydraulic roller, Lunati performance dual valve springs and collets, and Siemens Deka 80lb/hr fuel injectors among other supporting mods.
All of this was done to help it handle the fitment of a Vortech V3 SI side-mounted supercharger which turns the LS1’s output up to 11. Dyno testing has revealed it produces an immense 412kW (552.5hp) at 5885rpm at the rear wheels while running on 98RON fuel and its low-boost (12psi) setting.
Power is channelled through a Tremec T56 six-speed manual gearbox, with the original HK Bathurst Chev 8.5-inch 10-bolt differential retained and fitted with an Eaton Posi-Trac LSD hemisphere. A 4.11:1 gear set means it gets off the line well before happily sitting on 100km/h at around 2000rpm for relaxed highway cruising.
Braking is handled by 343mm ventilated and slotted front and rear disc brakes, with Baer six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers and Hawk Performance ceramic brake pads.
It rides on Pedders lowered front springs, with a Whiteline 24mm front sway bar and Nolathane bushes. All front suspension bushes including the body crossmember, ball joints, and outriggers were replaced in 2021. The front shock absorbers were replaced, along with the suspension and steering geometry reset in 2022.
It’s also been fitted with Simmons FR series three-piece wheels – sized 18x7-inch up front and 20x9-inch in the rear – shod in Nankang NS-20 tyres.
Inside, it features customised Ford Falcon XR8 seats trimmed in black leather from the Daytona Automotive range produced by The Australian Leather Company. A genuine Momo steering wheel has also been fitted.
Ahead of the driver sits a Haltech iC-7 digital dash display. It has also been fitted with an updated Kenwood head unit in February 2023, along with featuring Fusion Mono Block 2250w and VIBE Deathbox 1400w amplifiers, two 12-inch Black Air 1600X subwoofers in the boot, and four VIBE 300w split speakers in the parcel shelf.
Approved engineering reports were issued in June 2015 and August 2024 for the work that has been completed, ensuring this car is fully road-legal.
This is a truly exceptional build with all the right receipts and no expense spared. For Holden enthusiasts, this is undoubtedly one to watch.
