1971 Mercedes-Benz 600 'Grosser'
Fast Facts:
A neatly presented example of Mercedes’ legendary ‘ultra luxury’ saloon, offered from the care of a 9-year ownership with handbooks, service and maintenance history
The Details:
This 1971 Mercedes-Benz 600 ‘Grosser’ is a beautifully maintained example of the marque’s ‘ultra luxury’ saloon car, once the marque’s flagship and the most expensive car in the world.
An icon of luxury motoring, the Mercedes-Benz 600 was a favourite of the glitterati, owned by the likes of Elvis Presley, Francis Ford Coppola, John Lennon and our own Bob Jane.
It was one of the earliest cars to employ pneumatic self-levelling suspension, to ensure that the occupants remained suitably unruffled by the rigours of the road. The system included variable ride control, which provided multiple mode settings that could be controlled by the driver via a steering wheel mounted button, including a normal driving mode and raised ride height mode.
Mercedes-Benz produced a 6.3-litre ‘M100’ V8 with a single overhead cam and Bosch mechanical fuel injection to power the car, and run its numerous hydraulically driven conveniences. Despite the impressive weight, the Grosser is able to sprint to 100km/h in less than 10 seconds and has been known to outrun the 230 SL on the track.
The hydraulic system, also produced alongside Bosch, provides powered windows, seats, boot lid, ventilator flap and fully automatic air conditioning. Other features include a limited slip differential, servo steering and hydraulic disc brakes with vacuum servo assist.
This example is finished in silver over a blue leather interior, both of which are reported to be in good condition, as is the exterior brightwork. Likewise, controls, switches and electronics, including the complex hydraulic system and its various equipment, are reported to be in good working order having been restored where necessary.
It will be sold with service and maintenance history, as well as a complete collection of original handbooks.
A magic classic Mercedes-Benz, the likes of which the modern world has seemingly lost, this 1971 Mercedes-Benz 600 ‘Grosser’ benefits from conscientious care and is beautifully presented. A wonderful opportunity to enjoy old world luxury and classic touring, or a fine example to add to a considered collection of classics.
