The Details:
This 1987 Volkswagen Golf GTI ‘16V’ is a clean example of the original hot hatch, fit with the hottest 2.0-litre engine and finished in desirable Racing Green Metallic paintwork. Used as a daily by an enthusiastic owner, it’s a usable and enjoyable classic - one which every motoring fan should experience at some point in their lives.
This car was a personal import and is equipped with a 1,980 cc 16-valve engine. This is paired with a close-ratio five-speed gearbox and the owner reports that it pulls with plenty of power accompanied by an entertaining soundtrack.
Suspension, steering and balance were frequent points of praise for these classic GTIs, with this car now riding upgraded suspension and rare 15-inch Ronal alloy wheels.
This vehicle benefits from some subtle ‘90s tuning, starting with adjustable coil overs, H & R spacers and a K & N air filter. A full chrome package including mirrors, handles and locks has been fit to the car, with the rear wiper, antenna, side skirts and logos cleaned, headlights upgraded to LEDs with a Kamei grill cover, and the aerial moved to the roof. Final exterior touches include a single arm Bonrath wiper, GTI number plate holders and a rare Hella rear deflector.
Paintwork is reported to be in good condition, and the seller asserts an absence of rust. Some parts have been repainted or replaced, including doors and quarter panels, and there are some stone chips noted on the bonnet and wheel arches. There are some wheel scratches and the chrome insert on one window has been exhausted by its near 40 year service.
This car features the top of the range ‘Karat’ interior, which is reported to be in excellent condition. The headliner has been replaced and is in good condition, no cracks are noted in the dashboard, nor marks or rips in the seats. The parcel shelf is reported to be in one piece and not sagging.
The cabin features a Pioneer radio, amp and subwoofer, blue dashboard lights and custom floor mats. The seller notes that the fit on the radio could be improved.
This GTI 16V was serviced recently by the seller in December 2025. Recent work includes the starter motor, exhaust hanger, spark plugs and tie rod ends, and an oil change. The seller reports that tread on the rear tyres is getting low.
A collection of spare parts will accompany the car, including a rear spoiler, wheel arches, chrome dizzy cap and locks, the original radio, a wiper motor and arms and chrome inserts for the windows.
Offered reluctantly by a loving enthusiast owner, this 1987 Volkswagen Golf GTI ‘16V’ represents an ideal opportunity to experience the iconic hot hatch. Benefitting from the larger 2.0-litre 16-valve engine, recent care and consistent use, it’s ready to be enjoyed as a daily, a weekend cruiser or anywhere else your adventures may take you.
